Interview with Lap Steel Guitarist and Multi-Instrumentalist @MichaelBarryRec on #TheSashaMarinaShow!

Born and raised in a small rural town in  southeastern Connecticut Michael picked up the guitar at an early age. He played in various "below the radar" bands and in his early twenties embarked on a life changing cross-country soul search which eventually landed him back on the east coast in Rockbridge County Virginia. It was here that he began to experiment with loop technology and also fulfilled a long held desire to play the lap steel. It was also here, ironically, that he was irresistibly drawn to the art of stone masonry. He was fascinated to observe that by pushing the boundaries of his creative potential in a primarily physical direction with the stonework a hidden pendulum would often swing and draw out melodious gems from  somewhere deep in his psyche.

Enter his debut - On The Road To North Mountain. An instrumental odyssey that defies simple description. Organic acoustic guitar and atmospheric lap steel make up the core of this remarkable album. Progressive Ears amply stated, "Very rarely does something knock me off my feet like this disc from Virginia guitarist Michael Barry-Rec. This is music that needs to be heard and experienced." 2008 brought the release of Streams In The Desert. A carefully crafted album revealing a maturing artist. Showing outstanding potential for film, this disc was awarded "Acoustic Film Score of the Year" at the 2008 Los Angeles Music Awards. His most current full-length effort, Continuum, once again exposes an artist refusing to remain confined by external influences. Exhibiting a very tasteful blend of acoustic and electric instrumentation Michael invites his listeners on often lush, harmonic excursions thick with melodic sensibilities. Featuring special guest contributions from George Winston on lead single “Sanctum” and bassist JD Foster who has toured with Emmylou Harris, Lucinda Williams, and Dwight Yoakam. Additional stellar contributions were made by Johnny Hott on drums and Adrian Olsen on hammond organ.
Continuum

"The songs for Continuum came through and surfaced quite organically but it was the environment in the studio and all involved that kept the creative doors open and the magic bouncing off the walls" Barry-Rec shares.

Interview w/ Musician Jann Klose (@jannkloseband ) on #TheSashaMarinaShow

Jann's new album, MOSAIC is now on over 80 radio statons, and on iTunes, Amazon and Spotify. MOSAIC is a sonic, lyrical and emotional mosaic from an artist known for his multi- cultural roots, a widely-faceted career, and a “soaring voice” that “wins over the listener” according to the Washington Post. ”

The LA-ist wrote that Jann "can be accurately described as the man chosen to carry on the legacy of great musicians like Tim Buckley and Paul McCartney." TIME Magazine Columnist Joel Stein pranked Jann in his June 2013 column. WFUV radio stalwart Vin Scelsa devoted a few of his
famous monologues on Jann on his show.  Genya Ravan spinned “Make It Better” on her Little Steven's Underground Garage show, GOLDIE'S GARAGE when the song also hit regional video shows. Jann'new music video MAKE IT BETTER was directed by Yael Shulman (daughter of Gentle Giant's Derek Shulman) and the video is now up at MAKE IT BETTER on YouTube .

Writes Paul Freeman, at the San Jose Mercury News, "Klose shows he can create diverse new tunes that rival those of such masters as (Tim) Buckley.  Part of the comparison is because Jann is heard as the voice of Tim in the movie GREETINGS FROM TIM BUCKLEY (Focus World/ Tribeca Film). Recently ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT Online interviewed Jann about the film.

MOSAIC follows the indie success of REVERIE (2008) and SACRIFICE EP (2010) and the music video for DOING TIME. Produced by Grammy winner James Frazee (Esperanza Spalding, My Morning Jacket) and David Bendeth (Paramore, Bruce Hornsby, Elvis Presley). Double GRAMMY-winner Warren Russell-Smith mastered MOSAIC.

Jann has shared the stage with artists from all eras of music history including Rusted Root, Vonda Shepard, THE VOICE's Rebecca Loebe, Gary (Jeff Buckley, Captain Beefheart) Lucas, Suzanne Vega, Annie Haslam and Renaissance, Brett Dennen, and the late Pete Seeger and Les Paul.

Born in Germany, raised in Kenya, South Africa, and Hamburg, Jann came to the States as an exchange student in Cleveland. He performed in touring productions of Broadway shows (JEKYLL & HYDE, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR) and portrayed The Pinball Wizard in THE WHO'S TOMMY before he started his band.

Jann's music is heard on the GRAMMY-nominated HEALTHY FOOD FOR THOUGHT, on MTV CRIBS, the movie “Dead Broke” (Warner Bros.) featuring Paul Sorvino. He maintains a steady touring schedule of about 75-100 shows a year in the U.S., Europe and Asia.

Interview w/ @KellysLot on #TheSashaMarinaShow

Kelly's Lot plays Americana and Blues with a roadhouse rockin' sound that is upbeat, heartfelt and fun. The band was formed in 1995 by singer Kelly Zirbes after years of songwriting and playing for friends and family. Kelly Z, a folk singer with a heart for southern rock and blues, recorded her first demo CD, "Kelly's Lot", with J. Peter Robinson, composer and keyboard player. Working with Peter and manager Alex Rylance was the inspiration Kelly needed to actually pursue music as more than just a hobby. Kelly was always a late bloomer and music was no exception. "With age comes fearless confidence or maybe it was a little bit of 'life is too short'”.

Next came "Test Drive" which gave the band their first official release. It gave the insight to others that this band can play a variety of styles and rock them all. Along the way they recorded 3 LIVE CDs , 'Live at The Troubadour'. 'Stop And Make A Difference' and 'Trio', headlined local festivals, toured regionally and embarked on 2 national tours. Many USA radio stations, traditional, college and internet have played their CDs including their next 7 song EP 'Come To This' which was recorded to showcase the band's journey towards more blues. It was played in Europe and brought the band some international attention. Europe started calling but journey would have to wait. Playing for charity became a norm for the band starting in 1999 after Kelly realized that music and giving made a good match. It gave Kelly the extra inspiration to perform and write more. Kelly’s Lot has been featured on many media outlets for her music and for the charity work she has embraced. These include ABC Perspectives, Channel 4 in Milwaukee, Rock City News, LA times, Pasadena Weekly, Independent Songwriter Magazine, Mixdown Magazine, The Debra Duncan Show, Good Morning Texas, The Gordon Keith show and Fox TV Houston.

Many of Kelly's Lot fans are blues lovers and during this time they kept encouraging her to play more blues. It was a natural step since that is what she grew up with. Listening to her mother play records late at night. Kelly started composing music that fit that genre as well as the roadhouse and southern rock that Texan, guitar player and co-writer Perry Robertson added to the mix. In 2008 'The Light' was released which showcased most styles the band is known for. Three years in the making and playing lots of gigs during that time tested the band and it's members. With bills to pay and families growing the love of music took a back seat but eventually music won the battle and the band survived. Their next release in 2009, Pastrami and Jam, included a list of covers the band enjoys playing. It was never meant to be a CD, just a casual band get together to help a friend. But the magic spoke for itself and a CD was made. After booking more blues festivals including The Waterfront Blues Festival in Portland Oregon, the Big Fish Blues Festival, Maxson Roadhouse, The Santa Clarita Blues Festival and the Pasadena Blues Festival everyone felt it really was a natural direction for Kelly Z and the band to go down.

Never forgetting her roots, folk and rock were blended with those blues to capture the forever growing sound of of Kelly's Lot. "I'm excited to do more traditional blues but other styles are part of this band’s journey and  there's room for it all." Matt McFadden on bass and Robert Dill on drums add the signature rhythm and Rob Zucca adds the tasty licks on guitar. Recently they have opened for Tommy Castro, Shemekia Copeland, Marcia Ball, John Mayall, Curtis Salgado and have hosted blues events for charities and for fellow blues musicians. And finally with the help of European fans and friends they toured across Belgium, France, Germany, England, Scotland, and The Netherlands. In 2011 they released a live CD from Brussels, BE. 'Live in Brussels' which was released both in Belgium and The USA. It was the push the band needed to focus on Europe more. Their latest release, 'Plain Simple Me', brings the listener back to the beginning of this band, when Kelly was playing solo shows and calling herself a singer/songwriter.

Soon they will begin recording a new full band CD that will focus on their blues material as they introduce a horn section and keys for the first time on a recording.

All-around up and coming SuperSTAR! @Esnavi

Until you experience Esnavi it may be difficult to understand the name or what defines it.  The moment you meet her it all makes sense, Eclectic, Soulful, Natural, Authentic, Vivacious, and Intriguing – E S N A V I {Es-Nah-V}.  A singer/songwriter hailing from Milwaukee, now residing in New York City, she is a multifaceted artist with a voice of undeniable soul, lyrics of thought provoking truth, and music that harmoniously blends everything in between.  With the release of her debut album, Exit E, a 16-song musical journey inspired by love, society, and real life, her mission to enlighten the world with her music has begun. Her first single, Unexpected Love, reached the Top 40 on the Urban Adult Contemporary Charts shortly after its release and remained in the Top 40 Urban AC Charts for over 10 weeks. The video for the single has remained in rotation on VH1 Soul & Centric since its release and was selected as one of Centric Hot 10 Countdown picks.  Unexpected Love and her second single, Morning Dew is also currently in rotation on Music Choice-R&B Soul channel on cable television.  Now with the anticipated success of her next single, What U Need, television appearances, music licensing deals and two beauty campaigns, Esnavi is on the brink of becoming a powerful brand in the music industry.

After the release of Exit E, word traveled quickly about the sultry songstress who has not only been praised for her original collection of soul stirring music, but also for her electrifying performances.  From her YouTube video impromptu freestyle with beat box legend Rahzel, member of The Original Roots Crew, at Paris Blues to her performance at S.O.B.’s Sol Village, hosted by Eric Roberson, where she exemplified her prowess to go off script, or when she effortlessly rocked the stage of over 200,000 people at the 2011 Taste Of Soul Music Festival in Los Angeles with Tyrese, Eric Benet, Lenny Williams, Johnny Gill, and Goapele, Esnavi has proven that she is more than just a singer/songwriter, she is also a dynamic performer that commands the stage on any level.   Watching her perform you sense a savvy entertainer with a deeply embedded passion.  “I belong on stage.  This is my home. It’s where I connect to the audience with my live energy.” She remains true to that connection by living in the moment each time she graces the stage.

Her track record put her on a platform to make 2012 a noteworthy year for this talented star on the rise.  She performed at ESSENCE Music Festival during a live broadcast on Sirius XM Satellite Radio, headlined in front of a sold out crowd at Apollo Music Café, performed on Good Day New York morning show on FOX 5 NEWS, which has over 2 million viewers daily, rocked the stage at the historic Blue Note Jazz Club, performed at BAMcafé Live (Brooklyn Academy of Music) for an audience that reached capacity before she stepped on stage, secured a music licensing deal with H&M, Old Navy, Abercrombie & Fitch, Nine West, Ann Taylor and Arden B stores worldwide, became the first African-American face for Alison Raffaele Cosmetics beauty campaign, a cosmetics line carried in Duane Reade/Walgreens stores nationwide, which launched in Puerto Rico, New York City, Los Angeles, CA, Boston, MA, Chicago, IL, New Orleans, LA, Weston, FL, Birmingham, MI and Washington, DC, and to top it all off, she closed out the year by opening a New York Knicks game with an exceptional performance of The National Anthem at Madison Square Garden.

This year seems to be no different as she kicked off 2013 in the same direction.  In January, she joined BET Music Matters monthly showcase and ripped the stage for the enthusiastic crowd filled with her fans.  BET Music Matters is a campaign which focuses on highlighting the music industry’s next superstars.  Shortly thereafter she landed not one, but two television appearances on cable television.  She was seen on the TLC reality show, Starter Wives, and she performed for a memorial service on the VH1 hit reality show, Mob Wives.  And yet again Esnavi displays her multi-faceted talent of being more than just a singer/songwriter, by obtaining another beauty campaign – this time with Dazzle Drynail line by VB Cosmetics, in which she will have her own nail collection entitled, Esnavi Live, featuring colors named after songs on Exit E available in June 2013.

These major accomplishments have made Esnavi an independent powerhouse in a short amount of time. Although new to the mainstream, she has been on her mission for years.  As a very young child, her performing and writing skills were fostered.   At the tender age of 3, she performed for the first time at a Miss Wisconsin Pageant and acquired a love for writing poems around the age of 8.  A love for music was evident during those years as well.  Her vocal ability, however, wasn’t discovered until she was in high school.  It was then that the music she listened to growing up started to subconsciously mold the artist Esnavi is today.  From Stevie Wonder to Annie Lennox to U2 to Miles Davis, she was drawn to all genres of music.  Once she graduated from high school, the layers came together and Esnavi was writing, recording and performing with a local studio.  After high school she pursued a marketing degree at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. While studying, “Music became the driving force in my life while in college, and after graduating, I had an epiphany. Singing was the only thing I envisioned myself doing.  I became so passionate about it because I knew I had something unique to share.” No stranger to recording and performing, she had no qualms about making her move to New York.  Although her first album entitled, Uncommon Ground, in which she co-wrote with fellow Milwaukee native, Fulani Hart, was never officially released, it created enough buzz to land her on BET’s, The BET J List, as the featured unsigned artist, and MTV’s, The City.

Esnavi is definitely in her own lane, despite comparisons to the likes of Lauryn Hill, Sade, India.Arie, Jill Scott, and Erykah Badu.  Her voice is clearly distinct and the beautifully arranged story that comprises Exit E, which she co-wrote with producer, Michel Kunz, is incomparable.  The album which she describes as a musical journey is just that, displaying her versatility musically and vocally.  “We wanted to create good music that transcends everything. Music that anyone in the world could listen to and love.” When you listen to her music, see her perform live and feel her energy, you experience Esnavi. “This journey is not about becoming a celebrity. It’s about sharing music that stems from a real place with substance people can feel and relate to.” Esnavi is truly an original artist delivering a unique sound of soul to the world…her soul.

Country Singer Courtney Dickinson - @cdickinson

Most seniors in High School spend every minute they can with friends – hanging out, going to dances and applying to colleges for next year. Not 17-year-old Courtney Dickinson. While there’s no denying she enjoys spending time with friends, she also balances weekly trips to Nashville to pursue her dreams. Just this year, Courtney has become an active partner in the Musician’s On Call Program, and recently was a finalist in Dodge’s Inspired by You contest. This may seem overwhelming to the average teenager, but not to Courtney, who takes it all in stride and continues writing for her next project!

Let’s start from the beginning because Courtney’s story starts way before this whirlwind summer vacation. By now, Courtney is a seasoned professional, having graced the stage in front of thousands of fans all across the country for nearly a decade. It all started as a toddler, when Courtney began acting and modeling, finally becoming the youngest member of the Little General Cloggers on the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. By the age of 6, Courtney had the honor of performing at President Jimmy Carter’s Birthday Celebration. Over the next few years, Courtney honed in on her talents by studying with the top acting and vocal coaches in Los Angeles and creating an impressive list of appearances for a small town girl from Acworth, Georgia.

By 2009, Courtney decided it was time to start focusing more on her music career. Courtney, accompanied by her parents, made the 4-hour trip from Acworth to Nashville to start recording her debut EP. The choice soon became evident where Courtney would record the EP – Ocean Way Studios. After all, it is the world’s most awarded studio complex. With a hand picked backing band of country’s a-list musicians, magic happened, and Taking Chances was born.

Since the release of Taking Chances in October of 2009, Courtney has barely had time to live the life of a normal teenager. She’s spent the past four summers performing at Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge during CMA Fest. And CMA Fest 2011 was no different. Courtney took the stage at the Hard Rock Café with her newly formed band that blew everyone away. From her original songs like Quarter to Never and It’s Gotta be Rough to her unique country-fied cover of Born This Way, no one could deny that Courtney is on to something special.

How did you spend the summer you turned 16? Most people would tell you they spent their summer learning how to drive a car. But that’s just the beginning for Courtney. Courtney, unlike many other teens her age, spent the summer of her sweet 16 filming her first music video for Quarter to Never, racking up numerous performances during CMA Fest, as well as performing during the pre-party for Sugarland at Summerfest in Milwaukee, WI. And that was all by the beginning of July!

Whether it was Courtney’s Ready, Set, Don’t Go, duet with Billy Ray Cyrus at age 12, opening for Cowboy Troy at the Big & Rich party, or even performing the national anthem at an Atlanta Braves game, Courtney always finds a way to bring her southern roots to the stage, and won’t let anyone forget that she’ll always be a country girl.

Courtney Dickinson is a member of CMA, BMI and SAG.

Artista Brendaly - @BrendalyMusic
